The Los Angeles Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) has informed clients about a data breach that potentially exposed personal information following a phishing attack on March 20. The breach occurred when an employee clicked on a malicious email, compromising their account, which contained confidential client and patient data.
LACDMH immediately enlisted a nationally recognized forensic firm to investigate the breach. Within a day, the firm confirmed that the compromised emails and attachments included sensitive information such as names, dates of birth, addresses, telephone numbers, Social Security numbers, and medical record numbers.
While it remains unclear if any specific information was accessed or misused, LACDMH has proactively notified affected individuals via mail. The department has committed to reaching out to all impacted clients, including those whose addresses are not on file.
Clients concerned about the breach can contact LACDMH at (888) 217-0379 for assistance. The department’s website also guides how to protect personal information after the incident.
LACDMH regretted the breach, stating, “LACDMH regrets any inconvenience this incident may have caused.” The department has enhanced its security protocols and implemented additional technical safeguards to prevent future occurrences.
