Lloyds Banking Group has apologised to customers after a flaw in its Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, and Halifax mobile apps enabled customers to view other customers’ transactions on their mobile applications.
On Thursday morning, a large number of customers of Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, and Halifax said they were able to view transactions made by other customers on their banking applications.
The banking group, which boasted a net income of £18.3 billion and £4.76 billion in profit after tax last year, quickly reached out to customers to apologise for the software glitch that led to the data breach.
"We’re sorry that some customers experienced an issue viewing transactions in the app for a short time this morning," Lloyds Bank said. "The issue was quickly resolved and we’re looking into what happened." The company has not made a formal announcement about the issue on its website or social networking channels.
The technical malfunction occurs amid a drive by the British banking giant to universalise digital banking services as it rapidly closes existing brick and mortal bank branches across the UK. Between May 2025 and March 2026, the banking group closed as many as 136 branches, including 61 Lloyds, 61 Halifax, 14 Bank of Scotland branches.
According to Finextra, the banking group is also stopping customers from opening joint, premium and student accounts in branches, directing them to mobile applications to perform these tasks. Lloyds said customers can visit branches to get help with opening new accounts on their applications or to switch from other providers.
The banking group also announced on its website that it presently uses digital applications to process 90% of current account applications, enabled over 12 million customers to use their applications to check their credit scores, and recently became the first UK bank to offer in=app travel booking services.
Considering the wholesale migration to digital services, a temporary software malfunction can lead to large-scale disruptions to baking services or result in enormous data leaks, as evidenced by the temporary malfunction on Thursday morning.
