International Police Crack Down on Cybercrime in West Africa

In a significant blow to cybercrime, eight suspected criminals have been arrested in Côte d’Ivoire as part of an ongoing international operation led by Interpol. The suspects are believed to be connected to large-scale phishing scams that targeted citizens in Switzerland.

The fraudsters employed deceptive tactics, using QR codes to redirect victims to counterfeit websites that closely resembled legitimate payment platforms. Here, they solicited sensitive personal information, including login credentials and card details. To further gain their targets’ trust, the hackers masqueraded as buyers on various small advertising platforms or impersonated customer service representatives.

Interpol reported that the scam resulted in financial losses exceeding $1.4 million, with Swiss authorities receiving more than 260 reports related to the operation from August 2023 to April 2024.

During the investigation, law enforcement identified and apprehended the principal suspect, who confessed to orchestrating the scheme and profiting over $1.9 million. Five additional suspects were found engaging in cybercriminal activities at the same location.

These arrests are part of Operation Contender 2.0, initiated in 2021 to combat various cyber threats across the African region, particularly in West Africa. This operation addresses a wide range of financial crimes, including business email compromise (BEC) schemes and romance scams.

In a related development, a dual citizen of Nigeria and the UK was recently sentenced to seven years in a U.S. prison for his involvement in a multimillion-dollar BEC scheme, highlighting the growing international effort to tackle cybercrime and protect vulnerable individuals from fraud.
