IDScan faces lawsuits after breach exposes 153 million ID records

IDScan is facing multiple class action lawsuits over a data breach that exposed more than 153 million driver’s licenses and ID records.

IDScan is a technology company that develops AI-driven identity verification and document-scanning solutions. Its services are used by a variety of well-known businesses, including car rental company Hertz, FedEx, and hundreds of cannabis dispensaries throughout the United States.

Earlier this month, IDScan.net confirmed suffering a major data breach after cyber criminals began offering a database containing more than 153 million driver’s license scans from the United States and Canada on a dark web marketplace called “Nexus.” The hackers claimed they continuously exfiltrated data from IDScan’s cloud storage for over a year, exposing sensitive names, document images, and biometrics collected during in-person identity checks.

Cyber security journalist Brian Krebs, who first uncovered the breach, reported that it also affected millions of additional government-issued IDs, passports, and medical records.

A series of class-action complaints have been lodged against IDScan within the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The claimants—residents of California, Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana—suspect they utilised IDScan’s verification tools at some point, worry their private data has been breached and are pursuing monetary compensation while pushing the firm to upgrade its data security measures.

The lawsuits also claim IDScan failed to use proper security, thereby violating the Federal Trade Commission rules for protecting private information.

Markovits, Stock & DeMarco and Hall Attorneys are among the key law firms currently investigating the security breach and evaluating potential legal action on behalf of individuals affected by the incident.

The FBI has confirmed it is investigating the data breach, but cannot share details due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
