Game Freak, the Japanese video game developer renowned for co-owning the Pokémon franchise, has confirmed that its systems were breached in a cyberattack earlier this year, leading to a significant data leak. The Tokyo-based company disclosed that the attack occurred in August, when an unnamed hacker gained unauthorised access to its servers.
The breach reportedly exposed personal information belonging to over 2,600 current and former employees, including names and email addresses. While the company has not commented on the potential release of unreleased projects, reports suggest that sensitive data, including source code for various Pokémon games and previously unseen design documents, has begun circulating online.
Gaming news outlet Nintendo Everything has highlighted that leaked materials were also shared on social media platforms, including the CentroLeaks account on X and the PokeLeaks subreddit. However, the authenticity of these leaks has yet to be verified.
In response to the breach, Game Freak stated that it has “rebuilt and re-inspected the server” and pledged to enhance its security measures to prevent future incidents. The company issued an apology for the “great inconvenience and concern caused” to those affected and confirmed it has contacted impacted employees directly.
The cyberattack on Game Freak follows a trend in the gaming industry, with other companies, including Kadokawa and Nintendo, also facing significant breaches in recent years. As the Pokémon franchise continues to thrive, with over 480 million games sold globally, the repercussions of this breach raise serious concerns about cybersecurity in the gaming sector.
