Frontier Communications faces class action lawsuit following data breach

Frontier Communications Parent, a telecommunications company based in Dallas, faces a class action lawsuit after a significant data breach compromised the personal information of over 750,000 individuals, including 88,000 Texans. The compromised data reportedly includes names, addresses, social security numbers, and dates of birth.

Initially detected on April 14, the breach involved unauthorized access to Frontier’s computer systems. An investigation revealed that the unauthorized party had accessed company files a day earlier. Frontier serves over 1.7 million residential and commercial customers across 25 states.

Court documents indicate that Frontier formally notified the Office of the Maine Attorney General on June 6, coinciding with the dispatch of letters to affected customers. The Texas Attorney General’s Office received the breach report posted on their website this Monday.

Texas law mandates that businesses experiencing a data breach affecting 250 or more Texans must report the incident to the Texas Attorney General’s Office within 30 days of discovering the breach.

The class action lawsuit, filed in the U.S. Northern District Court of Texas in Dallas, asserts that Frontier’s customers are at significant risk of identity theft and other personal, social, and financial harm due to the breach. The suit further claims that Frontier did not adhere to industry standards and Federal Trade Commission guidelines for data security.

According to the lawsuit, Frontier was aware of its obligation to protect customer information but failed to meet these obligations. Frontier has not responded to requests for comment on the breach or the ongoing litigation.
