Fair Vote Canada, a prominent advocacy group for electoral reform, has reported a data breach that exposed the personal information of approximately 34,000 individuals. While the organization clarified that no financial information was compromised, the incident has sparked concerns about its data security practices.
The breach involved data from 2020, which became publicly accessible through an external website. The exposed information included names, phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, and, in some cases, details about donations, such as the dates and amounts contributed. Notably, no credit card or banking information was part of the leak.
Fair Vote Canada attributed the breach to a well-meaning volunteer who had been granted temporary access to the data for a specific project. However, the data was unknowingly moved to a website with insufficient security measures, leading to its accidental exposure. The organization was unaware of the data’s vulnerability until it was discovered and removed from the unauthorized location.
Following the discovery, Fair Vote Canada took immediate action to delete the data from the unsecured website and implemented new security protocols. Valerie Brooks and Steve Hindle, the organization’s Co-Chairs, issued a joint statement expressing their regret and reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding personal information. "We understand that this data exposure, even without malicious intent or evidence of misuse, is troubling and unacceptable," they stated.
In response to the incident, Fair Vote Canada has restricted database access exclusively to staff and contractors. The organization is also adopting more rigorous digital security measures to prevent similar issues in the future.
Fair Vote Canada has expressed regret over the breach and is taking steps to reassure its supporters. They are encouraging anyone with concerns or questions about the breach to reach out through their official email channels.
