Elon Musk has blamed a large-scale cyberattack for the widespread outages that disrupted X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, suggesting a well-resourced group—or even a nation-state—was responsible.
“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against 𝕏,” Musk posted, adding that while the platform faces daily attacks, this one appeared to be on an entirely different scale.
Internet watchdog Netblocks confirmed that X had been experiencing prolonged disruptions, with patterns resembling a high-intensity distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. These attacks flood servers with traffic, rendering services unavailable.
A hacker collective called Dark Storm Team took credit for the outages, boasting about their actions on Telegram. The group, known for launching DDoS-for-hire attacks, also claimed responsibility for taking down a UAE government website. However, they provided no evidence linking them to the X disruption.
Global law enforcement has ramped up efforts to dismantle DDoS-for-hire networks, with recent crackdowns targeting operators and infrastructure supporting such attacks.
While X services have been gradually restored, the full extent of the attack and whether the platform remains vulnerable is still unclear.
