Maryland-based community bank Eagle Bank has warned its customers of a possible security breach affecting Mastercard account data. The bank disclosed this potential compromise following an alert from Mastercard regarding an unauthorized intrusion into the systems of an undisclosed US merchant.
The unauthorized access, which reportedly occurred over nine months from August 15, 2023, to May 25, 2024, may have exposed Mastercard account numbers and other sensitive financial information.
In a regulatory filing with the Massachusetts state government, Eagle Bank emphasized that while the breach potentially exposed customers’ Mastercard debit card details, the bank’s internal systems and account records remained secure and were not impacted.
“MasterCard has advised us of a security breach of a United States merchant’s network. Your MasterCard Debit card data was among those that may have been exposed,” Eagle Bank stated. The institution urged customers to closely monitor their monthly checking account statements over the next 12 to 24 months for any signs of unauthorized transactions. To further safeguard against potential misuse, the bank issues replacing debit cards and canceling current ones.
With approximately $615 million in total assets as of the end of 2023, Eagle Bank is proactively responding to the incident to maintain trust and ensure customer security after this intrusion.
