Dental Specialists of Minnesota, operating as The Dental Specialists, has officially notified the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights of a data breach that exposed the sensitive information of numerous patients. The breach, discovered earlier this year, involved unauthorized access to several employee email accounts, potentially compromising personal and medical data.
The breach was first identified on January 23, 2024, when Dental Specialists learned that an unauthorized party might have accessed multiple employee email accounts. A subsequent investigation, conducted with the assistance of third-party cybersecurity experts, confirmed that the unauthorized access occurred between January 11 and January 23, 2024. During this time, the intruder may have viewed or accessed sensitive data stored in the compromised email accounts.
The affected information includes, but is not limited to, patients’ names, medical records, health insurance details, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial account information. After a thorough review of the compromised files, completed on June 10, 2024, Dental Specialists identified the individuals whose data was potentially exposed.
On August 9, 2024, Dental Specialists sent data breach notification letters to the impacted individuals. These letters provide specific details on the compromised information, allowing patients to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from identity theft and fraud.
