Cyberattack forces shutdown of Hayward City website and online services

The City of Hayward, located in the San Francisco–Oakland–San Jose Metropolitan Statistical Area, has temporarily shut down its official website and online municipal portals following a cyberattack. The incident, detected on Sunday morning, prompted city officials to take immediate action to mitigate potential risks to its network and data.

With a population exceeding 160,000 residents and proximity to Oakland and San Francisco, Hayward is a vital regional hub. However, the city’s online presence has stopped as a precaution against the ongoing cybersecurity intrusion. At the time of this report, the city’s website remains inaccessible.

According to a statement released by city officials on a temporary website, essential services such as 911, emergency dispatch, police, firefighter, and medical assistance are unaffected and continue to operate normally. The city has emphasized that there is currently no evidence of any breach involving personal information belonging to employees or the general public. However, a thorough investigation is underway in collaboration with cybersecurity professionals to ensure the complete integrity of the city’s systems.

While the city remains tight-lipped about the nature of the attack, officials did not respond to inquiries regarding whether it was a ransomware incident. Unfortunately, California has witnessed a surge in cyberattacks targeting various municipalities this year. Oakland, for instance, experienced a debilitating ransomware attack that incapacitated its government for weeks, eventually necessitating assistance from the California National Guard and other state agencies. Similarly, Modesto, located approximately an hour and a half away from Oakland, grappled with a citywide ransomware attack during the same period, forcing its police department to resort to radio communication.

Another notable incident occurred in San Francisco, where the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) fell victim to a ransomware attack, resulting in the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information from the railway’s police force. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department also faced its cybersecurity challenge, which it identified as a malware attack.

As the City of Hayward works diligently to resolve the ongoing cyber intrusion, it has encouraged community members and the public to engage with city services through alternative means such as telephone, mail, or in-person visits until further notice.
