Cyber insurance premiums soar as financial firms scramble for protection

Fintechs and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) are stepping up their adoption of cyber insurance as digital threats intensify and regulatory pressures mount.

According to the Economic Times, insurers in India have reported a surge in demand from fintech players and NBFCs over the past year, with premiums in the segment growing by nearly 50% annually.

The uptake has been driven by a series of high-profile ransomware incidents, rising fraud cases in digital lending platforms, and compliance requirements tied to India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) law.

Global trends mirror this rise. Munich Re’s Cyber Insurance Risks and Trends 2025 report notes that ransomware and data breaches remain the leading causes of loss, pushing organizations of all sizes to seek protection.

In the United States, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported that cyber insurance premiums written grew by double digits in 2024, alongside an increase in both the number and severity of claims.

Yet the growing interest has led to higher costs. Woodruff Sawyer’s Cyber Looking Ahead 2025 survey found that while premiums have stabilized from the peak hikes of 2021–22, insurers are tightening underwriting requirements and demanding more detailed disclosures from applicants.

For fintechs and NBFCs, cyber insurance is increasingly viewed as essential for investor confidence and regulatory compliance. But the barriers to entry remain significant. Smaller firms often lack the resources to meet the stricter security standards required by underwriters, raising concerns that some companies may remain underinsured despite escalating risk.

Industry experts expect the cyber insurance market to continue its expansion in 2025, with financial services among the fastest-growing segments. Analysts say the trend underscores the sector’s vulnerability, and the rising role of insurance in shaping cyber resilience strategies.
