Chanel faces major data breach, exposing sensitive info of U.S. customers

Chanel, the renowned French luxury fashion house, said that it experienced a major data security breach, compromising the sensitive personal information of its U.S. customers.

 

Chanel, renowned for its high-fashion clothing, accessories, fragrances, and beauty products, has long been celebrated for its elegant and sophisticated aesthetic, shaping women’s fashion for more than a century.

 

Recently, Chanel informed several U.S. customers via email about a data security incident. The breach took place when an unauthorised threat actor gained access to a vendor platform used by the company to manage customer data.

The luxury fashion house immediately launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

 

According to the email sent to affected customers, the breach was discovered on July 25, when threat actors infiltrated the network of one of its vendors. After an investigation, the company determined that the sensitive personal information of its customers including names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses were exposed during the breach.

 

While Chanel is yet to disclose the number of affected individuals, the company said the incident affected “a subset of individuals who contacted our client care center in the U.S.”

 

Earlier this year, several other luxury fashion brands including Dior, Tiffany, Louis Vuitton and Victoria’s Secret said they suffered significant data security incidents where threat actors stole personal data of its customers.

 

While Dior, Victoria’s Secret, and Tiffany’s data security incidents impacted their customers in South Korea, Louis Vuitton reported that its breach compromised the personal data of customers in Turkey, South Korea, and the UK.

 

In a press release, Turkey’s Personal Data Protection Board said that at least 142,995 people were affected by the incident.
