Brinks Home discloses cyberattack, says attacker threatens to release stolen data

Brinks Home, a Dallas-based smart home security provider, disclosed Wednesday that hackers breached a portion of its internal computer systems, and the company indicated it is facing a demand tied to stolen data.

The company said it first detected unauthorized access to its IT systems on July 20. Brinks Home did not name those responsible for the breach. Officials said the company activated internal response protocols upon discovering the intrusion, moved to contain the breach and brought in external cybersecurity specialists to assist with the investigation.

Brinks Home said its core security products and services have not been implicated in the breach, based on the information gathered so far, and that alarm monitoring and response for customers have continued without disruption.

Chief Executive William Niles said protecting customers remains central to the company’s operations and that its approach to internal system security carries the same weight. He said the company’s staff is working continuously with forensic specialists to resolve the matter and keep customers updated.

The party behind the intrusion has claimed it intends to release the information it accessed, and Brinks Home said that material could be made public. The company said it is still working to determine exactly what data was accessed and which individuals might be affected. Brinks Home said it would notify any individuals whose personal information is confirmed to have been compromised, in line with applicable requirements.

The company said further updates would be posted to its website as they become available, including information on how affected parties would be notified. Customers were directed to the company’s online cybersecurity update page or their customer account portal for additional information.

Brinks Home describes itself as one of the largest smart home security companies in North America, serving more than 1 million customers through professionally installed systems, round-the-clock monitoring and an Alarm Response Center. The company, headquartered in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, also operates through a network of independent authorized dealers and agents across the United States and Puerto Rico.
