BK Technologies Reports Major Cyber Security Breach Exposing Employee Data

American public safety radio manufacturer BK Technologies said it suffered a significant data security incident where threat actors breached into its internal network and stole confidential data of its employees.

West Melbourne, Florida-based BK Technologies designs and manufactures high-specification two-way radio communications equipment and software for public safety, government, and industrial customers.

In a filing with the United States Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), BK Technologies said that on September 20, the company detected suspicious activity within its internal network. The company immediately launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

BK Technologies also reported the incident to relevant law enforcement authorities and collaborated with them to resolve the matter at the earliest.

“As a result of the incident, a limited number of non-critical systems experienced minor disruption. However, through the Company’s remediation efforts, the Company believes that the third party responsible for this incident has been removed from the Company’s IT systems, and the Company’s ability to access information impacted by this incident has been restored,” BK Technologies said.

“As part of the Company’s investigation into this incident, it appears that an unauthorised third-party may have obtained access to and acquired non-public information within the Company’s custody and control, which potentially includes records pertaining to current and former employees,” the company added.

BK Technologies stated that the cyberattack did not disrupt its normal operations, which have continued without material impact since the incident was detected.

“While the Company’s investigation and assessment of this incident is ongoing, as of the date of this filing, the Company does not believe the incident is reasonably likely to materially impact the Company’s financial condition or results of operations,” BK Technologies added.

At the time of publishing, no known hacker group claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on BK Technologies. The company also did not share details on who was behind the attack, how much data was compromised, or whether it had received a ransom demand.
