As students across the United States head back to classes, new research shows that educational institutions are facing an unprecedented wave of cyberattacks.
A global study by Check Point Research found that between January and July 2025, the education sector recorded a 41% year-over-year increase in attacks, averaging more than 4,300 per organization each week the highest rate of any industry worldwide.
In North America, the surge has been even steeper, with U.S. schools and universities experiencing a 67% rise in weekly attacks compared to last year.
The situation is reinforced by data from Comparitech, which reported that ransomware incidents against U.S. schools, colleges, and universities jumped 23% in the first half of 2025, with 130 confirmed or suspected cases.
Average ransom demands now exceed half a million dollars, reflecting the value of the personal and financial data held by educational institution.
Experts warn that schools are uniquely vulnerable due to outdated systems, limited cybersecurity budgets, and the expanded attack surface created by remote learning tools.
With many districts and universities still relying on legacy infrastructure and minimal IT staffing, attackers have found fertile ground for disruption.
The surge in ransomware demonstrates how easily entire school operations can be frozen, while sensitive student and staff data is put at risk.
The findings highlight an urgent need for schools to strengthen their defenses, modernize infrastructure, and prepare clear incident response strategies.
Without greater investment and support, the education sector will remain a prime target at a time when digital security is becoming as essential to learning as classrooms themselves.
