Autonomous Flight Technologies targeted in cyberattack by BlackCat ransomware group

Autonomous Flight Technologies (AFT), a leading unmanned drone systems manufacturer, has reportedly been targeted in a cyberattack attributed to the infamous BlackCat ransomware group. Allegations suggest that the attackers breached AFT’s systems and purportedly sold sensitive data to an undisclosed foreign entity.

AFT, renowned for its innovative unmanned drone technology and esteemed partnerships with industry leaders like Airbus, NASA, NBC, and Northrop Grumman, has not issued an official statement concerning the purported data breach, leaving the claims unverified.

According to Dominic Alvieri, a noted threat researcher, the individuals behind the alleged breach purportedly sold the compromised data to a foreign nation. However, the absence of specific details from the perpetrators has amplified uncertainties surrounding the incident.

Specializing in Uncrewed Autonomous Systems, navigation technology, and industrial data acquisition services, AFT’s core mission faces a potential setback due to this purported cyberattack. This incident highlights the persistent cybersecurity challenges confronting companies in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sector, echoing concerns outlined in NASA’s report on Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities for Urban Air Mobility.

The BlackCat ransomware group gained infamy after infecting over 60 victims since its emergence in mid-November 2021, per an FBI FLASH alert issued in April 2022. Moreover, the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) reported a surge in BlackCat ransomware group activities, noting a recent cyber incident within one of its member organizations.
