Auto parts maker LKQ Corporation says cyber attack impacted its Canadian operations

American automobile parts manufacturer, LKQ Corporation, said it experienced a major cyber security incident that affected its business operations in Canada.

 

Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, LKQ Corporation manufactures alternative and specialty parts and accessories for automobiles and other vehicles. The company has operations in 25 countries, including Canada, Italy, India, Sweden and more.

 

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on December 13, LKQ said that on November 13, it detected unauthorised access to the internal network of a single business unit in Canada which affected the unit’s daily operations.

 

The company immediately launched an investigation and engaged external cyber security experts to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

 

“Upon discovery, we immediately began taking steps to investigate, contain, and recover from the incident, including activating our security incident response and recovery plans, partnering with industry leading forensic investigators, and initiating containment measures for affected systems,” LKQ Corporation said.

 

LKQ also notified relevant law enforcement authorities about the incident and is in the process of analysing the impacted data. The automobile parts manufacturer said it will notify affected individuals about the impact of the incident on their data security in due course.

 

“As a result of the incident, the Company’s operations within this Business Unit were adversely impacted for a few weeks while affected systems were recovered; however, the Company believes that it has effectively contained the threat and that none of its other businesses were impacted by the threat, and the Business Unit is now operating near full capacity,” LKQ added.

 

The company said that the “impacts of the cyber incident are not, and are not reasonably likely to be, material to our financial condition or results of operations for the fiscal year.”

 

At the time of publishing, no known hacker group has claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on LKQ. The company also did not share details on who is behind the cyber attack or the nature of the same.
