Apple’s upcoming AI-powered tabletop robot could open new cyber threat frontiers

Apple is reportedly making a major push into the smart home and artificial intelligence markets with a new lineup of devices, spearheaded by a tabletop robot with a movable arm. According to recent reports, the company is aiming for a 2027 launch for the device, which is being referred to internally by some as the "Pixar Lamp" due to its design.

The device would be a key part of Apple’s strategy to expand its AI capabilities and better compete with rivals like Google and Amazon in the smart home space.

The centerpiece of Apple’s new plan is a tabletop robot that features a 7-inch display, similar to an iPad mini, mounted on a movable limb. This robotic arm can swivel, extend, and reposition itself to follow users around a room.

The goal is for the device to act as a more interactive and "person-like" companion than a traditional smart speaker. It’s designed to turn and face whoever is speaking to it, and it can even "interrupt" a conversation to offer relevant suggestions, like recommending restaurants during a dinner-planning discussion.

The device will be powered by a new, more advanced version of Siri, which is being overhauled with large language models to enable more natural, back-and-forth conversations. This new Siri will also have a "visual personality," with Apple reportedly testing an animated version of the Mac’s Finder logo for its look.

The robot will also support FaceTime calls with a Center Stage-like feature, allowing the screen to physically move and keep a person in the frame.

While the tabletop robot is the flagship device, Apple’s robotics efforts reportedly extend beyond a single product.

The company is said to be exploring other concepts, including a mobile robot with wheels similar to Amazon’s Astro. There have also been internal discussions about developing humanoid robots for industrial or retail use.

These projects signal that Apple is committing significant resources to robotics and AI, with teams across its hardware, software, and AI divisions working on the new technology.

This move comes as Apple seeks to solidify its position in the AI race. While the company has already invested heavily in AI, these new hardware products are seen as a way to create a more tangible and engaging user experience, placing a living, breathing digital assistant right in the home.
