5.11, a California-based apparel brand of outdoor clothing, footwear, uniforms and tactical equipment, said that the data security incident it suffered earlier this year compromised the sensitive personal information of more than 25,000 customers.

In a notice of data security incident filed with the Office of Maine Attorney General, 5.11 said that in August, it identified unusual activity involving its online store, 511tactical[.]com.

The apparel maker said it immediately launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident and identify whether any customer payment card information was accessed or acquired without authorisation.

“After a thorough forensic investigation, on September 12, 2024, we determined that this incident may have involved payment card information of customers who purchased products through our online store between July 12, 2024 and August 22, 2024,” 5.11 said.

The firm added that the compromised data included customers’ names, email addresses, payment card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes. Its filing with the Maine state regulator also revealed that at least 27,742 individuals were impacted by the incident.

“As soon as we discovered the incident, we reported the matter to the payment card brands and law enforcement in an effort to protect your information and prevent fraudulent activity. In order to reduce the likelihood of a similar incident occurring in the future, we have implemented additional measures to enhance the security of our e-commerce platform,” 5.11 added.

5.11 has advised all affected individuals to regularly monitor their credit reports, account and benefit statements and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities, including the police and state attorney general. It has also offered complimentary restoration assistance through IDX to all affected individuals.
