Akira Ransomware Group Claims Cyberattack on BK Technologies, Says 25GB of Data Stolen

The infamous Akira ransomware group claimed responsibility for a cyber attack on American public safety radio manufacturer BK Technologies, stating that it stole 25GB of confidential data.

West Melbourne, Florida-based BK Technologies designs and manufactures high-specification two-way radio communications equipment and software for public safety, government, and industrial customers.

In a filing with the United States Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), BK Technologies said that on September 20, the company detected suspicious activity within its internal network. The company immediately launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

BK Technologies also reported the incident to relevant law enforcement authorities and collaborated with them to resolve the matter at the earliest.

“As a result of the incident, a limited number of non-critical systems experienced minor disruption. However, through the Company’s remediation efforts, the Company believes that the third party responsible for this incident has been removed from the Company’s IT systems, and the Company’s ability to access information impacted by this incident has been restored,” BK Technologies said.

“As part of the Company’s investigation into this incident, it appears that an unauthorised third-party may have obtained access to and acquired non-public information within the Company’s custody and control, which potentially includes records pertaining to current and former employees,” the company added.

BK Technologies stated that the cyber attack did not disrupt its normal operations, which have continued without material impact since the incident was detected.

Recently, the Akira ransomware group claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on BK Technologies, adding the company to its data leak site. The group said that it obtained 25GB of confidential information, including employee records, accounting documents, confidential agreements, military contracts, NDAs, and payment data.

It remains unclear whether BK Technologies paid a ransom, the amount demanded by Akira, or the method the attackers used to breach the company’s network.
