75-year-old anti-virus software entrepreneur John McAfee has died in a prison cell in Barcelona. The cause of death is suspected to be suicide, as authorities stated ‘everything indicates’ that he’d taken his own life.
His death comes just hours after a Spanish court agreed to extradite him to the US to face tax evasion charges. McAfee had been held in prison since his arrest in Spain in October 2020 on charges of alleged tax evasion in the U.S.
The US justice department accused McAfee of failing to file tax returns for four years, evading tax liability by having income paid into nominee’s accounts, and concealing assets, including a yacht and real estate property.
Nishay Sanan, McAfee’s lawyer, said he would be fighting all of the charges, stating:
“This is again the US government trying to erase John McAfee,” Mr Sanan told NPR on Wednesday. “This man was a fighter. And in the minds of everyone who knew him, he will always be a fighter.”
McAfee claimed in a hearing earlier this month that the charges against him were politically motivated, and that he would spend the remainder of his life in prison should he return to the U.S. However, the court said they found “no revealing evidence” that he was being prosecuted for political reasons.
A tweet McAfee wrote in 2019 stated that he had not paid taxes for several years, as he believed ‘taxation is illegal’.
