Simultaneous interpreters are few and far between due to the challenging nature of the role. Researchers from Baidu and Oregon State University however might soon be able to help with that.

AI developers have recently published the latest results on how AI-based machines can be used for simultaneous translating. The problem, though, is not only the speed and ability for multitasking that this work demands but the different structures of languages. For example, to translate from German to English, translators have to pause and “wait for the German verb” which follows much later than in English sentences.
